Multi-Year Roth Conversion Calculator

Model a year-by-year plan to move a Traditional IRA into a Roth IRA. Explore conversion strategies, tax withholding, and Medicare income thresholds using a hypothetical fixed indexed annuity.

Your inputs

Illustration only. Assumes a contract permitting in-contract Roth conversions; only withholding and RMDs use the free withdrawal allowance. Confirm the contract’s actual provisions.

How to read these together. Tax brackets apply after the standard deduction of . IRMAA uses MAGI before that deduction. Crossing a tier can increase each enrolled spouse’s Medicare premiums two years later. The bracket strategy stays one dollar below your selected ceiling; fixed and percentage strategies flag crossings without automatically reducing them.

Reference figures: IRS 2026 brackets, IRS age-based deductions, and CMS 2026 Medicare premiums. Held constant for all projected years.

Assumptions & limitations

This is a hypothetical educational illustration, not tax, legal, investment, or product advice. Results are estimates, not guarantees or a recommendation to convert. Tax withheld is a flat percentage you enter, not a calculation of your actual tax liability. Roth withdrawals are tax-free only when applicable qualification rules are met.

The model begins in 2026, assumes a fully pre-tax Traditional IRA, and holds income, tax brackets, and IRMAA thresholds constant. It includes the standard deduction and age-65 additions, but excludes the temporary senior deduction, itemized deductions, state-tax calculations, NIIT, tax credits, and Social Security taxation interactions. Enter MAGI rather than gross income. IRMAA is monitored from age 63 for either spouse on a joint return; disability-based Medicare before age 65 is not modeled. Actual future thresholds may change.

Index credits are hypothetical and applied after beginning-of-year distributions and conversions. Bonuses may have vesting restrictions; actual contracts may impose caps, spreads, participation rates, surrender charges, fees, and market value adjustments, none of which are modeled. This recreation assumes in-contract Roth conversions do not consume the free withdrawal allowance, while RMDs and withholding do. This is not a standard feature of every annuity; confirm with the carrier. “Free withdrawal” means free of modeled contract charges, not free of income tax. Additional taxes on early distributions before age 59½ are not modeled.

RMDs use the Uniform Lifetime Table and an inferred birth year of 2026 minus your entered age. A different table may apply for a spouse more than 10 years younger who is the sole beneficiary. RMDs cannot be converted. This tool does not support inherited IRAs, after-tax IRA basis, or first-RMD deferral. The comparison reinvests after-tax RMDs for both paths, reduces taxable-account growth by a 15% tax-drag assumption, assumes a basis step-up at death for those accounts, and applies a single heirs’ tax-rate discount to remaining Traditional IRA assets. It does not simulate the timing of inherited IRA distributions. Conversions stop after Year 10; the comparison then continues growth and RMDs. Consult qualified tax and financial professionals before acting.
